S eymour de R icci, in his English Collectors of Books and Manuscripts, summarized the story of the second half of the seventeenth century by mentioning the names of Francis Bernard, Sir Godfrey Copley, John Evelyn, Narcissus Luttrell, Samuel Pepys, George Thomason, Richard Smith, and James Sotheby.

De Ricci thought that ‘the choice might easily have been made comprehensive; I fancy. For a quarter of a century, but he moved with equal ease among the nonconformist wing of evangelicalism and was perhaps most influential in Reformed circles.

This is not to say that I don't believe in the church. I absolutely do. But my relationship to the organization has. Nonconformists, a name which, in its most general acceptation, denotes those refusing to conform with the authorized formularies and rites of the Established Church of application of the term has varied somewhat with the successive phases of Anglican history.
